There are two common ways of defining channels to a player: playlist (M3U) and account (Xtream Codes). Both reach the same stream; the difference appears in how the information is entered into the player and how the playlist is updated.

In this article we put the two methods side by side. The aim is to let you quickly determine which is more suitable for the player and device you use.

The basic difference: playlist or account?

In the M3U method a playlist URL is given to the player. The player reads this URL and creates the channels and the category information. In the account method, the server address, username and password are given to the player; the player connects and fetches the playlist itself.

  • Number of details: a single URL in M3U, three fields in the account method.

  • Playlist source: in M3U the playlist is read from the URL, in the account method the player fetches it by connecting.

  • Update: in M3U the playlist is refreshed, in the account method the playlist is received during the connection.

  • Player support: M3U is supported more widely; the account method is used on players that support the fields.

Comparison table

The table below summarises the headings that are decisive in terms of setup and daily use.

M3U vs Xtream Codes comparison
Topic M3U (playlist) Xtream Codes (account)
Definition Playlist URL Server address, username, password
Setup time One field is entered Three fields are entered
Playlist refresh The list is fetched again from the address Received during the connection
Channel order The order prepared by the playlist The category order created by the player

Changing device The URL must be entered again The same details are entered on the new device
Security Access can be given if the URL is shared Access can be given if the password is shared

Player support

Some players work only with a playlist URL; others support both the playlist and account login. In practice the method supported by the player on your device is the one used. For app comparisons, the How to choose an IPTV player article and the TiviMate vs IPTV Smarters comparison article.

  • Support check: look at the list of login options in the player.

  • Device compatibility: on older devices the playlist method is supported more often.

  • Interface effect: in the account method the category order is shaped according to the player.

  • Fallback: the setup can be repeated with the other supported method.

Why does the update behaviour matter?

If a playlist URL is used, a refresh must be made in the player for the new channels added to the playlist to appear on the device. In the account method the player takes the current playlist when it connects, so this step generally happens by itself. Whichever method is chosen, keeping the player on the current version reduces the likelihood of problems.

If the playlist is not refreshing or channels appear to be missing, the steps in the IPTV playlist not loading article can be followed. If you are just starting the setup, the M3U setup and Xtream Codes setup pages guide you step by step.

What should be considered in terms of security?

In both methods the access details are personal. Sharing the playlist URL or the password can lead to others accessing your account. The simplest precautions are to make sure the URL and the password are not visible when taking screenshots and not to write the details in open channels.

Frequently asked questions

Can the two methods be used together on the same subscription?

If the player and the subscription scope are suitable, both methods can be used. The number of devices that can be watched at the same time depends on the subscription scope.

Which one is quicker to set up?

Because three fields are entered in the account method, a few more steps are needed compared with the playlist URL. In return, the need to refresh the playlist disappears.

What happens if the playlist URL changes?

The new URL must be entered into the player. In the account method no action is needed as long as the details do not change.

Which method is more secure?

Both carry access information. What is decisive is not the method but not sharing the details and managing the records left on the device.
